A repeatable set of instructions for performing a task, often in the shape of a mathematical formula or chain of formal logic. Algorithms can contain only a few steps, as in a decision tree, or a countless number of them, as in search algorithms. Historically, algorithms have been “rules-based,” or carefully crafted to respond to certain pre-determined of inputs, but AI technologies like machine learning are leveraging algorithms that respond to unexpected information, and even to refine and improve themselves over time.
