Cricinfo
fan friendly?
by Umair Naeem
December 1, 2008

Talk to any informed cricket fan in Pakistan, India or the other countries that play the game, and Cricinfo.com will most certainly crop up. When it comes to breaking news, personnel developments or commentary on the game, Cricinfo is a popular resource for cricket fans across the globe—and especially in the subcontinent.

Founded in 1993, and now wholly owned by ESPN, the UK-based website has established itself as the definitive online cricket site for live scores, up-to-the minute news, as well as opinion pieces, blog links and comments from fans. It counts itself as one of the top five “single sport” websites in the world, which can be attributed to its sustained quality. Due to the website’s comprehensive, independent coverage and its association with ESPN, Cricinfo is a brand synonymous with journalistic integrity and a non-apologetic, hard-hitting editorials that challenge conventional opinions and the status quo.

Cricinfo.com greets visitors with a straightforward, linear layout and a multitude of links to the top stories of the hour, including the latest live scores in ongoing matches, injury reports, or other timely news. Visitors can navigate through clearly identifiable links to the home pages for any ongoing or upcoming cricket series, and it’s easy to locate “your” country’s link to access more focused news about your favorite cricket team.

Furthermore, Cricinfo.com offers a plethora of statistics and information on every form of cricket from the Indian Cricket League to women’s cricket. Cricinfo also provides visitors with information on a number of select domestic cricket leagues from Ireland to Cricket Kenya. The website’s homepage features essential amenities such as a fantasy league, wallpapers, and photos of the stars.

Cricinfo embraces technology, which makes it fun, collaborative and interactive—fulfilling the needs of the 21st century sports fan. The site does not shy away from experimenting with new technologies or adjusting to young users’ evolving preferences. For example, Cricinfo TV streams videos of interesting cricket-related programming and interviews. Another innovation is the 3D animation that recreates notable events and actions of live matches.

The website also has a downloadable client for use in cell phones to facilitate easy access through the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). And cricket fans can even download widgets and post them to popular blogging and social networking websites.

Regarding content, Cricinfo offers specialized columns, blogs and regular features from famous cricket personalities from all over the world. No matter which part of that world you’re from, you will find something of interest. The fact that Cricinfo has editors in all the main cricketing nations certainly adds to the scope of its localized content.

cricinfo Some columnists post regular podcasts on the website, improving the interactivity aspect for visitors. To further facilitate the user experience, there are links to the most read stories and the top five player searches, as well as daily newsletters and in-site search feature. For those professionals bored at work, the site even has online cricket-related games and quizzes.

The site, however, can certainly improve by adding more collaborative features for visitors, such as forums and live chats with the columnists and guest cricketers. Also, features like the widgets need to be made more user-friendly and bug-free.

All in all, though, Cricinfo.com is a complete website for cricket fans and consistently offers a rewarding, fresh and informative experience for its regular visitors—like me. Most importantly, it embraces technology and is willing to utilize social platforms to help users access what they really want: quality interactive content about their favorite cricket teams and athletes.

Cricinfo - fan friendly?

Not even Eufa.com, with its plethora of videos and flash presentations can match Cricinfo as a knowledge base and a centre where the great cricketing minds as contributors come together in both written and audio format. That said, Cricinfo needs to use available technology where its readership is best served, i.e. its Fantasy cricket platform. It needs to be more flexible, interactive
