USDA Topples Food Pyramid: Will Americans Care?

The new 'plate' logo is more visually compelling than the confusing old pyramid system, but its grossly simplified. At best, it might remind people to eat different food groups -- but it's going to take a hell of a lot more than a colorful plate to tackle obesity in America, let alone teach them about nutrition.
Betsy Ross - June 4, 2011

I think the new logo is more vivid than the previous one. Easy to remember, recall, and visually appealing. Of course, it needs to supplemented with education on healthy food habits as well. Strictly from a logo point of view, this is a much better than the earlier one.
Khandoker Mahmudur Rahman, Assistant Professor, School of Business, United International University, Bangladesh - June 4, 2011

Interestingly, this is the second communication device announced this year that was encouraged by First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against obesity. The first was the Nutrition Keys front of package nutritional facts labeling effort that was introduced by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Marketing Institute this past January.

While the task was simpler for that communication device (its primary focus is to indicate the amount of fat, calories, sodium, sugars, as well as vitamins and minerals in a given food item), it’s worth noting that the approach used there requires considerably less interpretation and works in a way that aligns with consumer behavior (placed on the front of packages – which shoppers do read, rather than on the side or back, which they typically do not), rather than trying to get consumers to adjust their means of accessing information.
