After the year-end holiday shopping frenzy hyped by Black Friday-Cyber Monday marketing comes GivingTuesday, a social philanthropy initiative started by New York's 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation to encourage charitable donations by individuals, brands and corporations alike.

The pitch is simple, and in the spirit of the holidays: “On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. Wal-Mart  is focusing on smaller-format stores, bringing back "Action Alley" — wide aisles filled with palettes of discounted merchandise — and offering same-day pickup for online purchases in an effort to jumpstart sluggish U.S. sales.

Apple shares pass $300 for first time on promise of iPad, China expansion.

Bing is adding a social layer to its search results, with a little help from Facebook. now generates QR codes in addition to short URLs.
