Wikipedia's most valuable brand asset is trust. For the information portal, which turned 10 last year, to maintain its credibility, and its value, it must cultivate trust with its users, and create trust that self-interested parties are not influencing its product, i.e., its content.
So new questions about Wikipedia editors taking money to change content could combust into the greatest threat the brand has seen to date, bigger than waning interest and wooing academia or even rivals vying for its perch. A Business Insider column titled “Why Quora Is Wikipedia's Worst Nightmare” argues that the crowdsourcing startup, founded by Adam D'Angelo and other ex-Facebookers, will overtake the ten-year-old free encyclopedia. Despite some controversy, Wikipedia considered the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, with 22 million articles.
While Quora, the San Francisco-based $400 million startup, is still “a tiny gnat compared to Wikipedia's traffic,” notes BI, it has “trajectory [that] shows an enormous amount of promise, and given Quora's buzz, shouldn't be ignored.”
In addition to a growing database, Quora is flexing the muscle of a Q & A site widely attractive to the tech industry. Microsoft’s Bing has integrated it into its social search build-out, further leveraging the use of Facebook data first integrated in 2010 and augmented by a social sidebar this year.Continue reading...

Food for thought on two high-profile cases with online behavior at the heart of them: As New York Congressman Anthony Weiner watches his political career go down in flames, following the release of an even cruder picture that he admitted today he tweeted, his naivete about social media is a "tweet road to oblivion," as Washington Post op-ed writer E.J. Dionne Jr. puts it.
In an entirely different drama grabbing America'a (and the world's) attention, the trial of Casey Anthony — the young woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee — is rife with evidence from online activities: Photobucket uploads, Facebook posts, MySpace images, and (today's focus) cached web searches for incriminating terms (84 searches just on "chloroform") on Wikipedia and Google, plus text messages and cellphone pings tracing her whereabouts.Continue reading...
