Trademark Watch: Deadmau5 vs. Disney, Twitter vs. Twitpic and more

Now ear this: Canadian DJ Joel Zimmerman, better known by his stage name Deadmau5, is entangled in a trademark dispute with Disney after the media giant filed a 171-page document in opposition to the DJ’s US trademark registration. 

Disney has argued that the Deadmau5 mouse-shaped headgear, which Zimmerman wears while performing, is too similar to their staple Mickey ears. Though the two mice logos are reminiscent in their shape and structure, Deadmau5 has received trademark rights over the mark in over 30 countries, including the UK, Japan, and Italy.

Even so, a foreign registration should have little or no bearing on how the US Trademark Trial and Appeals Bureau (TTAB) decides the dispute. The TTAB will look at the marks as they are used in the United States, and any potential confusion in light of the American public. There are many interesting angles to the case.

Zimmerman has kept the public abreast of the case with a flood of tweets, telling Disney to “Lawyer up”, and posting his own cease and desist letter claiming Disney has infringed on his copyright to the song “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff.” The copyright claim is unrelated, but it shows that Zimmerman is up for a fight—as is Disney, of course.Continue reading...

Joel Thomas Zimmerman has a knack for drawing attention to himself. The house-music icon better known as deadmau5 sports a colorful and massive mouse head at live events, and dates the equally outrageous actress/model/tattoo artist Kat Von D has a way of helping the 31-year-old Canadian do such a thing.

And Nokia is happy to take advantage of his ability. Last November, he flew to London to rev up the crowds with a live music and 4D light projection show on London’s Millbank Tower to help promote the company’s Lumia 800. The show was projected onto big screens in six other English cities and live-streamed for those around the globe who wanted to pay attention. UFC Product Placement in Deadmau5 Video Knocks Out Beer Brands

If music indeeds soothes the savage beast, the folks over at Ultimate Fighting Championship missed that Shakespearean memo. The organization has turned to the world of pop music to try and stoke more fire-breathing fans and tap into the crossover audience of house music-crazed youths. As USA Today points out, UFC already dominates the world of mixed-martial arts, but, just as its stars do, UFC would love to crush anything it has in its path and expand its fan base exponentially. 

Once they become fans, there are plenty of DVDs, books, collectibles, and clothing to suck cash from their wallets, but how does something like UFC maximize its exposure to fans who may not be aware of its subtly and grace? Music, it turns out, is the channel UFC has turned to with the help of Canadian house-music DJ, performer, and producer Joel Zimmerman, who performs as Deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse") sporting a giant mouse-head mask.

Thanks to a partnership with UFC, Deadmau5’s video for his new single, “Professional Griefers,” features the musician controlling a robot that takes part in an MMA battle against a robot controlled by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way.Continue reading...

Viral Video Watch: Nokia and deadmau5 Create 3D Spectacle in London

Skyscraper? Check. deadmau5? Check. Light Show? Check. Nokia Lumia 800 phone with Windows? Check and show time!

On Monday Nov. 28th, Nokia illuminated the Lumia brand by teaming up with deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse" for those wondering) for a free music and light show spectacular at London's Millbank Tower. The skyscraper's 800 windows were covered with vinyl as 16 projectors beamed 3D images onto it. Three dimensions not enough? deadmau5 created exclusive remixes for the performance which added another.

This isn't the first type of launch event of its kind, and by "its kind" we mean using large projectors for free shows at launch events— witness Jordan Brand's Carmelo Anthony M8 launch event in New York, where a holographic projection of Carmelo walked on water (the Hudson River, to be exact).

While projecting on a building is always an attention getter, the envelope has been pushed further still.Continue reading...
