With SpaceX Success, Musk Rocketing Into a Brand Name

Posted by Mark J. Miller on May 23, 2012 02:59 PM

It may be soon that “musk” may not just signify male perfume. Instead, American consumers may immediately associate it with space travel or, more likely, with gobs of cash.

Like Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and Paul Allen, Elon Musk is a wealthy man who can now fund his boyish billionaire enthusiasm for space travel, and has now taken a major step toward making those kinds of trips more accessible to the common man.

The founder of SpaceX was obviously thrilled that his rocket made it off the launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Tuesday following an aborted attempt. Retailers Sign Up for NFC Mobile Payments Tests

Posted by Sheila Shayon on May 16, 2012 02:12 PM

The race for NFC-based mobile payments is heating up with projections for 2013 exceeding $13 billion globally, up from just over $7 billion in 2011, according to Gartner research.

Isis, the mobile-payments joint venture backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, has signed up Coca-Cola, Macy’s, Aéropostale, Dillard’s, Foot Locker (and its subsidiary Champs Sports) and Jamba Juice, as well as hundreds of local retailers in Texas and Utah who will start accepting Isis payments by this summer.

Both Isis and competitor Google Wallet use NFC chips that store user’s credit card data or pre-loaded digital cash. Both companies are also working with check-out scanners and retailers including Gap, Office Max, Toys ‘R’ Us and Walgreens.

Google Wallet is currently available on four Sprint handsets and none from the mobile operators backing Isis. Sprint is the only U.S. carrier backing Google Wallet and to that end just released the LG Optimus Elite for Virgin Mobile.Continue reading...

Barclays Promotes Pingit Mobile Payments App with One Tough Customer

Posted by Sheila Shayon on April 16, 2012 12:04 PM

“Waiting for a mate to pay you back? Let the boy sort it out for you,” is a humorous push by Barclays for Pingit, the person-to-person mobile service for sending and receiving money for free, to anyone with a UK current account and UK mobile phone number.

The TV commercial, promoting the Barclays Facebook-hosted Pingit app, features a menacing child aggressively asking an adult office worker to repay a pizza debt using the Pingit app. The promotion lets users send custom versions of the video to friends who owe them money, encouraging them to settle via Pingit.Continue reading...
