It's only a rumor, says Wired, but Apple is widely thought to be launching another innovative product as early as January. Some think this electronic device could save print media from oblivion.
The so-called "Apple Tablet" is thought to be a 10-inch screen, possibly as part of a new iPod Touch/iPhone gadget. The new device would potentially compete withAmazon's e-book reader, Kindle. But it could be more than that, says Wired: "...an Apple tablet would specialize in reviving dead-tree media (i.e., newspapers, magazines and books)."
Speculation has been fueled by supposed talks between Apple and The New York Times, and possibly with several magazine publishers.
As Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2009 report observed, Apple is "among the most iconic of relatively young brands in the world." Ranked as the number 20 global brand, and with its Brand Value up 12% in a dismal year, Apple’s ability to reinvent has become one the brand’s most valuable trademarks. Fueled by the leadership of industry icon, the seemingly resurgent Steve Jobs, the company is building on its history of developing products that anticipate, or create, the future—which makes speculation about the Apple tablet all the more compelling.
Will Kindle fire up enough competition to cure the ills of traditional print media, or will Apple's latest product be the future of publishing?
