Mass Retailer American Eagle Hopes For Mass Consumption

Posted by Sara Zucker on November 6, 2009 11:18 AM

While other mass retailers are closing up shop where they aren't wanted, American Eagle Outfitters has taken it upon themselves to do the opposite. Their new 25,000-square-foot flagship is located in the most populated section of Manhattan, Times Square, and you won't easily miss it, because the store comes complete with 15,000 square feet of LED signage.

With nearly as many bras as square footage (7,500, to be exact), the brand will also show their New York pride with themed underwear. Just what New Yorkers needed! WWD reports:

AE CEO Jim O'Donnell projected about 20% exclusive merchandise to the store, including undies printed with neighborhood maps, subway maps, apples and taxis - how cute - and other special-edition items such as "Run Central Park" and "Run NYC" tees designed by graffiti artists.

This will be American Eagle's fourth outpost, dwarfing any other location in the chain; the next-largest shop is only half the size. Though departments named "Denim Library" and "Bra Conservatory" sound like they would be more at home in a university, the store's sheer size makes those names more apt than one might initially think.

Also featured will be "line-busters," like handheld POS check-out available throughout the store. Customers will get their "15 Seconds of Fame" on the way out, posing for a snapshot that will be broadcast on the Times Square Jumbotron outside within minutes.

The new store opens officially on November 19. Hours for the new store will be 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Will you be there to egg on the marketing ploy?
