Apparently, people haven’t tired of Twitter.
According to Royal Pingdom, the social networking juggernaut had more than 1.2 billion tweets in January, which marks the most tweets in Twitter history. Considering CNN ran an article in late January on how tweets have dwindled since August 2009, Twitter’s resurgence has taken many by surprise. But not Evan Williams, Twitter's CEO.
Just last month Williams tweeted: “Across all metrics […], yesterday was Twitter’s highest-usage day ever (and today will be bigger).” Williams, not surprisingly, is confident that the volume of tweets will increase throughout the month of January and all of 2010.
One has to wonder why CNN and other news outlets were so eager to use the term "peak" in association with Twitter. Twitter, which was founded in 2006, has increasingly become a staple in social networking. It is conceivable, however, that its impressive expansion in such a short time period compelled analysts to speculate about an equally dramatic demise for the brand. In reality, though, Twitter has simply superseded its expectations, which resulted in a very human reaction: a raised eyebrow.
For any company or website to experience the type of growth and success Twitter has enjoyed is remarkable, but it also rouses professional cynics and naysayers who demand continued or greater success, and define any other result as failure. Life doesn't always work that way, and neither does business.
So no need to worry Twitter users, Twitter will be around for quite some time.
