YouTube Aims to Capture Life in a Day

Posted by Shirley Brady on July 7, 2010 10:30 AM

Directors Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald, with the help of sponsor LG Electronics, are helping YouTube with a history-making experiment: Life in a Day, an effort to capture 24 hours of moments, big and small, captured on video on July 24th. Everyone is invited to capture and upload video to a special YouTube channel on that day.

As YouTube's blog notes, "You can film the ordinary — a sunrise, the commute to work, a neighborhood soccer match — or the extraordinary — a baby's first steps, your reaction to the passing of a loved one, or even a marriage."

LG Electronics is supporting the project as "a key part of its longstanding Life's Good campaign and to support the creation of quality online content that can be shared and enjoyed by all."

As for what happens with the July 24th footage submitted, the directors' production companies will help screen and edit the submissions into a documentary which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next year, and "if your footage makes it into the final cut, you'll be credited as a co-director and may be one of 20 contributors selected to attend the premiere."

This is very similar (perhaps on a smaller scale?) to the One Day on Earth Project which is working to create a documentary of life around the world on 10-10-10.  It's good to see people coming together and using technology to help us learn more about one another.  I hope both projects will garner enough support to be successful.  www.onedayonearth.org
