Kraft Debuts Ted Williams Commercial

Posted by Shirley Brady on January 9, 2011 10:15 PM

Well, that didn't take long. Here's a behind-the-scenes peek at the first commercial featuring a voice-over by Ted Williams — aka the homeless man with the golden voice, overnight fame, new website and Facebook page.

As the just-hired voice of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, this spot debuted tonight during the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on ESPN. It was recorded last week while he was in the middle of an Internet and media darling (and still wearing that jacket), and his second Kraft spot will debut during the Golden Globe Awards broadcast, Jan. 16th on NBC.

Kraft describes Williams' brand debut as "a gooey tale of family, hope, and second chances. And it'll make you feel all warm inside." Watch the spot and see if you agree, after the jump.

The brand's description for this spot, which it posted on Friday and already has more than half a million views on YouTube:

"Dad's in the doghouse for bringing home an unexpected dinner guest. Is Mom willing to save him with the crowd-pleasing taste of gooey, cheesy KRAFT HOMESTYLE? Check out the newest 'You know you love it' campaign www.kraftmacandcheese.com/facebook"

Perhaps more surprising than the quick turnaround with Williams — the kid turning to camera and saying, "Dad really screwed this up."

Sounds great.  He's a natural.  Just hope he doesn't get hounded too much.  Don't know how he's handling the buzz and pressure - I know I'd have a difficult time of it.

Nice V.O. but the ad itself is one more example of the current trope from the consistently unimaginative and derivative advertising business - the idiot father. Absolutely appalling.

Even his smooth, rich voice can't overcome the grating negativity of ALL of Kraft's recent Mac & Cheese campaigns.  Stupid parents, snarky kids, awkward dinner tables - not sure where Kraft is going with this campaign but they've singlehandedly removed the "comfort food" reputation that mac & cheese has earned over the years.
