The Old Spice Campaign Your Dairy Queen Ad Could Smell Like

Posted by Abe Sauer on April 5, 2011 03:30 PM

We recently checked out the new Dairy Queen campaign ("a guitar that sounds like dolphins") and asked if it was a ode to, or a spoof of, the now-iconic Old Spice Man spots with Isaiah Mustafa.

Behold the latest installment in DQ's campaign above. "We don't just have rainbows, we have rainbows on fire"? "Old fashioned shaving bunnies?" Amusing, but derivative. If that's not evocative of the Old Spice campaign's brand of hearty absurdity, what is?

The comments on this one agree — look at how many times the word "random" is used.

Abe, it's easy to be a hater. And your pretty base and thoughtless commentary proves that here. I don't see the connections you make. Old spice owns random and absurdity? Um... I don't think so. Amusing but derivative? How wonderfully dismissive of you. These are some of the better commercials on TV right now. That's pretty obvious. Anyways, congratulations on getting a comment on one of your posts. Must be thrilling for you. You should get back to writing about the movie Hop now.

It's not just absurdity that's similar. The model spokesguy walking through one after another surreal situation while confidently spewing bizarre stream of confidence direct to camera is what's lifted.

Who said it wasn't good? But derivative? Absolutely. And just look at the comments on the video from the audience: "....old spice guy woulda made this ad even better...as is, it's just copying his success." Maybe you don't see the connections but, clearly, much of the spots' audience does.

Sure there are always some haters like yourself of course. But when I look at the comments I see mostly fans. 10 to 1 at least, who see hilarity for what it is. Who probably, like me, enjoy commercials that try to entertain them while they sell their product. I don't care if it reminds me of skittles or starburst if it makes me laugh. Who gives a crap. So yeah, your reference to the audience comments is just plain wrong. I'd go and quote youtube as well, but why bother. I'll leave you to the quotes and half-assed reportage. After all, it's what you do! It's the little niche you've carved out for yourself! Why use a full ass, Abe, when it's so much easier to only use half of it?

Well, considering I did call it "amusing," it seems you agree with me then.

I would have been a lot harsher than Abe. I think the commercial is completely retarded. Dairy Queen has always struggled with commercials that reel you in, or shown the same comedic appeal that Taco Bell have. For the longest time they had those pair of creepy lips that just floated around, and talked like a stalker. The new commercial is totally 100% stupid. It makes no sense. We don't have bunnies, we have antique shaving bunnies that can shave a man while he sits on a rock at the edge of a cliff behind a rainbow that's on fire. Now go buy a burger from DQ! Man, I can't get in the car fast enough.

The Old Spice commercials are bad enough. Look at me. Now Look away. Now look back. No don't. Now close your eyes. Now open them. See me? Of course you don't. That because I'm over here, on top of this mountain. How did I get up here? I'm half Pegasus. Here I come. Now be like me and wear Old Spice. It sucks as bad as the DQ commercials.

In the end, DQ sucks! Their commercials have no sell factor. They are not witty, or cute, or funny. They dont make me want to go there for anything, and quite frankly, If it wasn't for their Ice Cream cakes, treats, etc., they would have been out of business by now.

Hank. You might try to make yourself look like an overly intelligent, deep character, that's a master ofthe arts, but you're not fooling anyone. if you find humor in those commercials you're as retarded as they are. No fancy speeches are gonna make you look any cooler. you better stop using those curse words, before your mom takes away your G.I. Joe collection.
