Viral Buzz: Magneto/Lady Gaga Fan a Walking X-Men Ad

Posted by Abe Sauer on June 8, 2011 01:45 PM

This video of rock-n-roll Magneto fan singing Lady Gaga's Born this Way is a better viral marketing effort than most of what 20th Century Fox actually did to promote X-Men: First Class. [hat-tip]

Great find, Abe. I love it.

It's interesting that the X-Men: First Class chose to eschew any major product placement or brand tie-ins. Why? Did they think they didn't need the exposure? Did they feel that the films are getting too saturated with that stuff? I would not guess it was oversaturation when they're adding another X-men property to the mix.

It will be very interesting if 20th Century Fox embraces this kind of fan content and helps promote it. That always seems to me to be a better reaction than threatening a lawsuit. Like it or not, user-generated material becomes inseparable from a brand in the minds of the average connected consumer.

I'm on record a few other paces suspicious if Fox/Marvel didn't think it's film was too smart and thus above the kind of childish tie-ins done for Thor and Cap America.

Again, given that the entire baby boomer gen has the cuban missile crisis burned into its brain, the X-Men revisionist history seems like it would have been a spectacular opportunity to reach a more adult audience. I mean, do they think 57 year olds don't like action movies? I mean, that's the generation that MADE John Wayne.
