Altoids Opens Hall of Curiosity on Tumblr and eBay

Posted by Michael Waltzer on November 14, 2011 04:30 PM

In the world of Altoids, you can't be curious enough. Which is why, with the help of Energy BBDO, the brand is inviting fans to explore the Altoids Hall of Curiosity. The site includes a back story on how "Once upon a time a there were Altoids.

A mint so strong, it changed the course of history forever (and ever and ever.)" Historical relics from Altoids' "curiously strong" past are on display and also available on eBay for auction to the highest bidders.

On Altoids' eBay page, you can designate from 10-100% of your final sales profit donated, as well as regular dollar donations. Some examples:

Sale proceeds, by the way, don't go to Altoids but to Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education in the U.S. So far bids on eBay have ranged from .99 cents to over $90.

Over on Facebook, Altoids has been posting images of the items in the auction on their wall and in other advertising for the site.

Jennifer Capo United States says:

I like the creative concept here, and I hope it does well just for inspirations sake.

I'd be curious who this campaign is actually targeting and why?  If its intention is to show the public that this Brand HAS a history?  Check.

I may be mistaken, but it seems that the target audience that collects vintage brand items is a very different crowd then the Altoid lovers of today that refresh with a cool blast at late night clubs.   A great experiment!
