Giving back is proving is good business and good for morale at Starbucks. The brand just named a new corporate community officer, and reported the results of its second annual Global Month of Service, in April. The global commitment to "30 days of inspiring service" yielded 700,000 individual acts of service in 34 countries, covering cities from Beijing to Berlin to Nashville, with local volunteer efforts including:
• 400 Starbucks partners and families across China gathered in Beijing to restore local community parks and teach residents of the Hujialou North community how to be more environmentally aware and incorporate “green living” tips in their every day lives.
• Virginia's Project Dominic, a local nonprofit for the homeless delivering daily necessities (soap, deodorant, toothpaste, socks, gloves) to people living in tents, cars, or on the street.
• 120 volunteers cleaned and painted a Boston area orphanage used by at-risk youth in foster care.
• 100 volunteers worked with Casa Zezinho painting classrooms, landscape grounds and improve the learning environment for 1,200 students at a local school in a low-income Sao Paolo neighborhood.
“We offer our heartfelt thanks to the thousands of customers and partners who took an active role in helping to address the unique needs of their communities through these programs. We are truly inspired by their contributions,” stated Cecilia Carter, VP Global Diversity, Community and Government Affairs, Starbucks.
Starbucks' other philanthropic efforts updated their progress. The Vote.Give.Grow program enlisted customers and partners in the U.S. to vote online for allocating $4 million amongst 124 local NGOs. Top award grantees are:
• Hope Communities, Denver, CO: $25,000 to help thousands of people with affordable rental housing to low-income families for 32 years, also providing classes and programs.
• DonorsChoose.org, California: $25,000 to help classrooms in need.
• YouthBuild Boston, Boston, MA: $25,000 for vocational and academic training programs.
• LIFT, Chicago, IL: $35,000 to operate resource centers for volunteer advocates to work one-on-one with low income community members to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, help make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like childcare and healthcare.
All grants will be distributed to the awardees by June 15th.
The brand's Create Jobs for USA platform continued to raise funds to create and sustain jobs. Since launching in November, this program from Starbucks and Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), working with Google Offers and Banana Republic, the first national brands to sign-up with a shopping event to raise donations, as well as citizens nationwide, has raised and distributed more than $10 million.
“These accomplishments are a powerful reminder of how we, as a company, are committed to using our scale to give back in innovative and impactful ways,” added Carter. “This year’s April community campaign was designed to spotlight and celebrate the great work our customers and partners do all year long, and to demonstrate that working together, we can drive real positive change.”
