UNICEF Taps Into Restaurant Diners’ Generosity

Waterborne illness is the second leading cause of preventable childhood deaths worldwide, killing an estimated 4,000 children every day. That’s why the UNICEF Tap Project, now in its sixth year, is asking thousands of volunteers, restaurants, partners and individuals to protect young lives with safe, clean water.

A donation of $1 for a glass of tap water during World Water Week, March 19-25, at participating restaurants across the U.S. will give a child clean, safe water for 40 days, or 40 children safe water for one day. 

“Many of us consume and use safe, clean water every day without thinking twice. Meanwhile, in communities across the globe, disease can spread with lethal swiftness for the millions of children and adults who lack access to a safe water source and adequate sanitation,” said President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Caryl Stern. “Today, for too many of the world’s children, clean water can mean the difference between life and death.”[more]

UNICEF’s work is in more than 100 countries and since 1990, more than 2 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water sources and 1.8 billion people to improved sanitation facilities aided by their efforts; nearly $3 million has been raised to date. An old hand at raising money and awareness each Halloween via kids’ collection boxes, the Tap Water project targets adults with a nominal donation — $1 per glass of water — for a great cause.

For Tap Water 2012, award-winning campaign illustrator Tavis Coburn and international PSA and commercial director Brent Harris are on board, while Giorgio Armani Fragrances returns for the third year.

From March 1-31, Giorgio Armani Fragrances will donate $1 for each Acqua di Giò for Men and for Women spray cologne or gift set purchased in the United States and $1 for the first 100,000 people who “like” Acqua for Life on Facebook. For their new product, Acqua di Gioia Rollerball eau de parfum, for each 10 ml purchased in the U.S. they’ll donate 100% of the retail sales price — up to $15 per item.

“The simple act of washing a child’s face with clean water can prevent debilitating diseases—like blinding trachoma, an infectious eye disease that spreads from child to child. Blinding trachoma is endemic in 57 countries, with 1.2 billion people living in trachoma-endemic areas, meaning millions of children without access to clean water are at risk of becoming blind from trachoma.”

“Perhaps that is what ultimately unites us as a world: the fact that, no matter how prosperous a nation, how developed, all share the plight and embarrassment of having so many suffering children. We are united by our neglect, our abuse, our absence of love. Have we forgotten about the children, and thus forsaken the next generation?”
