Move over Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively, there is a new belle of the ball and she’s a Southern spitfire.
The Oscar-winning actress is bringing Southern style to the masses with her new clothing, accessory and home decor line, the magnolia-infused Draper James.
In contrast to Paltrow’s haute lifestyle site Goop, Lively’s artisanal Preserve and Jessica Alba’s baby-centric The Honest Company, the Tennessee native is simply putting the “pretty back in pretty please.”
Her goal is to “bring contemporary, yet timeless Southern style to your wardrobe and your home, no matter where you live.” So does Witherspoon have the potential to be the next Lilly Pulitzer?
Will the masses appreciate the nod to good ol’ fashioned manners, proper home entertaining and chic preppy style attire? Will anyone outside of the American South spend $155.00 on a “Totes Y’all” tote bag?
Witherspoon has faith that the modern woman will take a page from her book, or e-commerce site, and welcome her brand and design sensibility into their lives. Given the recent stampede for the Target x Lilly collection, she may just stand a chance.
The site also features a Love, Reese blog which highlights Southern artists, writers, musicians, storeowners, chefs and more to show that Southern prep is modern, lively and cool.
As for the unusual name, there’s a story there too, she explains:
I started this company to honor my Southern heritage and in particular my grandparents who were, and still are, the greatest influences in my life: my grandmother, Dorothea Draper and my grandfather, William James Witherspoon. My grandparents taught me everything I know about gracious Southern living. From them I learned to dress and act like a lady, to take pride in my home, to reach out to help a neighbor, and to always invite everyone in for a visit.
The newly-minted designer also plans to open the first Draper James brick-and-mortar retail store this fall, y’all, in Nashville.
