The Girl Scouts of Western Washington stood up for LGBT rights by returning a $100,000 gift to a donor who wanted a guarantee that the gift not be used to support transgender girls.
“We were thrilled!” the council noted on their funding page.
“However, when the fact that Girl Scouts welcomes all girls, including transgender girls, was in the news, the donor asked us to return their gift unless we guaranteed that the money would not be used to help transgender girls. We said Girl Scouts is for EVERY girl. And we gave the money back.”
They are now asking their community and the community at large to help raise that money back.
“Thank you for sending the loud and clear message that Girl Scouts is for EVERY girl! We’ve raised enough to ensure that 500 girls can join a troop, go to camp and participate in a multitude of life-changing Girl Scout experiences.”
According to the Girl Scouts of the USA’s website,
“Girl Scouts is proud to be the premiere leadership organization for girls in the country. Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe.”
