YouTube Execs Address Community Standards, Brand Safety

With Facebook expanding its “Watch” video product to individual creators and its own creators pushing for opportunities to make more money on the platform, YouTube is perpetually on the hot seat these days.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki spoke to Recode on Monday evening in a fireside chat at its Code Media conference in Huntington Beach, Calif.

“We have a really wonderful ecosystem and so the priorities that we have this year are building trust among our advertisers and our creators, tightening our policies, building more engagement, increasing the creator ecosystem that we have with educational content,” she commented. “We have this amazing platform and we want to invest it that.”

YouTuber Casey Neistat also released a video with Wojcicki’s right hand, YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl, about guidelines for YouTubers in the wake of the Logan Paul situation.

Wojcicki also addressed Paul in her interview, saying he hadn’t met the criteria for being banned from the platform.

“He hasn’t done anything that would cause those three strikes,” Wojcicki said. “We can’t just be pulling people off our platform … They need to violate a policy. We need to have consistent [rules]. This is like a code of law.”

YouTube temporarily restricted ad revenue on Paul’s channel after he showed a suicide victim on-camera, which he subsequently apologized for, and a later video in which he shot a Taser at a dead rat.

Posting a tasteless video isn’t grounds for being banned, Wojcicki said, even if advertisers don’t want to support that creator or express concerns about brand safety.
